INSPIRATION: For the past few years, every December when the snow starts to fall, I would get the same phone call from my prima Valerie who lives in Denver.

“Cousin! I need mangos, coconuts, an ocean breeze . . . I need you to make me a tropical vacation candle!”

It’s true what they say about your cousins, they are your first best friends. We’ve gone through a lot together --- boyfriends, husbands, divorces, children, grandchildren, cancer, grandparents, and parents dying, and through it all, I’ve always known I can count on them for anything and everything.

My primas Valerie and Belinda taught me how to dance, smile at boys and wear makeup. I learned how to walk in my first pair of high heels with them and we would drive around town cruising. We thought we were cool.

We’ve gotten a little older, but I still depend on them and whenever I feel like the world is closing in on me and I need to have a good cry and get an honest perspective, I call my primas. They listen, they tell me the truth and they never judge me. I love them so much, I count on them. Do you have primas like that?
